Becoming a Habitat Family |
Becoming a Habitat Partner Family begins with an inquiry to the MCHFH office. A pre-application is used to determine whether a family appears to meet our eligibility requirements: - Monongalia County residency or employment
- Total household income between 30 and 60 percent of median income for Monongalia County
- Current housing is unsafe, overcrowded, financially draining, or otherwise substandard
- Ability to assume financial responsibility for 20-year interest-free mortgage
- Willingness to help build their own home. Each person age 18 or older who will be living in the home is required to account for 250 hours of work, called "sweat equity," on their own or other Habitat homes. People with disabilities will be accommodated.
We follow the guidelines set forth in the Fair Housing Act and the Equal Credit Opportunity Act. We do not enter into partnership with an applicant lightly and the applicant must be ready to put in many long hours working on Habitat projects and be prepared to handle the responsibilities, financial and other, that come with home ownership
